As hemp growers, we are super cautious about posting health claims about cannabis. As a result, please do not see the articles below as making any claims of effectiveness of CBD or cannabis. We are simply posting research and articles discussing that research, so we can have the conversation.
There is a lot of research in cannabis going on now that the Federal Farm Bill has made hemp federally legal. For the first time since the 1970s researchers can now look for the benefits of cannabis. The article below from Forbes references two papers/articles, which I have linked below as well. We are really hopeful that with the current legal environment the benefits of CBD and all cannabis products will be thoroughly researched.
The Forbes article posted here explains how cannabidiol, one of the cannabinoids found in cannabis that is also known as CBD, might help to reduce the inflammatory lung response to Covid-19. It also may reduce ACE2 expression in the tissues of the body that serve as the initial infection point for Covid-19. Recent research into Covid has shown that the virus infects humans by binding the the ACE2 receptors in lungs and airways. People with fewer ACE2 receptors, such as children and young adults, seem to have less susceptibility to Covid, and those who are infected often have less severe infection. If CBD is able to reduce the expression of ACE2, perhaps it can reduce the susceptibility of those users to Covid as well, much like how children are less prone to infection?
The Forbes article also references an article that shows that CBD may also reduce inflammation due to immune response. If true, this would suggest that “Cytokine Storms” might be treated with cannabis and CBD as well. Cytokine storms are an over-reaction of the immune system which overwhelms the body with inflammation. These immune responses are thought to be why the 1918 Flu was mostly fatal to young, healthy individuals.
If it turns out to be true that CBD blocks ACE2 expression AND reduces the inflammation response that leads to cytokine storms, that would be fabulous news for fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. It would be a one-two punch to make the disease not only less likely to infect someone, but also less severe in those who did get infected. Obviously much more research needs to be conducted. We are all standing by as the world finds new treatments for Covid-19.
Wouldn’t it be nice if something as simple as an all-natural plant could be one of the treatments, instead of a mass-produced chemical made by pharmaceutical companies?
