We are starting a new series called “CBD and Your Health.” Each article will focus on cannabidiol, and the impact that it can have on your body. We will reference scholarly articles on the subject of each post, and offer information as accurately as we can muster. This is the first installment, focusing on anxiety.

We simply find scholarly articles, summarize them for easy understanding, and allow the readers and users to determine if CBD would be appropriate for them.
One of the areas that cannabis seems to be of a benefit is aiding with anxiety issues. We have had several customers claim a benefit to their stress and anxiety through sustained use of CBD. This article will reference a study in the Permanente Journal that discusses CBD’s relationship to those with insomnia and anxiety. Since we will not dig into the entire article, it is worth clicking the link above, as that study references a wide variety of benefits of CBD. Also, please note that this study was performed before CBD was federally legal. That has since changed with the signing of the 2018 Federal Farm Bill. CBD is now legal, which should increase the number of studies on the efficacy and safety of CBD.

Main Outcome Measures
This study was focused on sleep an anxiety. Participants were tracked via monthly visits, and scored on a standardized scale month over month. The scores ranged from 0 to 56. These scores were totaled for each month for all study participants. A score of 0 – 25 indicates mild anxiety. A score of greater than 25 indicates severe anxiety.
The image below shows the results for both sleep and anxiety patients. Our focus for this article is on anxiety, though the data show benefits for sleep issues as well. Notice that for the anxiety patients, the improvement from the start of the study to month one is dramatic, and then remains throughout the study period.

Anxiety scores in the study participants decreased “fairly rapidly” and these low scores were sustained throughout the study period. This result is consistent with other studies, and clinical data on CBD. The side effects were minimal, and centered around fatigue, which could have been the result of higher dosing. In this case, it appears that CBD did reduce the anxiety of the study participants, though there are numerous impacts to those results that could be in play.
The conclusion from the study is quoted below. Since the study used open-label CBD products, they added a caveat that until better studies are conducted, the data from studies such as these should be interpreted carefully.
Formal studies on efficacy and dose finding are much needed. Some urgency exists, given the explosion of lay interest in this topic and the rush to market these compounds. Current understanding of the physiology and neurologic pathways points to a benefit with anxiety-related issues. The results of our clinical report support the existing scientific evidence. In our study, we saw no evidence of a safety issue that would limit future studies. In this evaluation, CBD appears to be better tolerated than routine psychiatric medications. Furthermore, CBD displays promise as a tool for reducing anxiety in clinical populations, but given the open-label and nonrandomized nature of this large case series, all results must be interpreted very cautiously. Randomized and controlled trials are needed to provide definitive clinical guidance.
